My name is Charis. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis three years ago. I’ve had nine surgeries – an emergency total colectomy, ileostomy reversal/j-pouch hook-up, mucosectomy, ileostomy “reinstallation,” a j-pouch removal/simultaneous hysterectomy, an emergency resection and stoma revision, a final stoma revision, and the removal of my anus and creation of a “Barbie Butt” (ie, no hole!!). Fitness is one of my biggest passions but I also like to read, draw, write, spend time with my family and friends, and shop. I’m a graduate student in History and my Master’s thesis focuses on the medical and social histories of Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, ostomies, and gastroenterology in general. I am also currently studying to obtain my personal training certification and will be launching my own personal training business in the near future. I speak publicly on the topics of IBD and ostomies and am the Vice President and COO of Girls With Guts (Girls With Guts), a non-profit organization that aims to raise the self-esteem of women and girls with IBD or ostomies.
